Cambridge Coach House Smart Home & Bespoke Home Cinema Installation

Transforming a converted Coach House into a fully integrated Smart Home takes more than simply adding technology. It requires careful planning, discreet installation, and systems that work seamlessly with the character of the property.

For this Cambridge project, Visual Control Systems delivered a four-phase Smart Home installation combining a dedicated reference-grade home cinema, whole-home audio, intelligent lighting control, automated shading, and complete Control4 home automation, all designed to enhance day-to-day living without compromising the original charm of the building.

A Converted Coach House With Big Ambitions

When the clients first approached us, they knew they wanted something special from the property, particularly a dedicated Cinema room, but they were also clear that technology should never dominate the home visually. This was not a modern new-build where systems could simply be dropped in.

The property’s original beams, period layout, and interior design aspirations meant every part of the installation had to be carefully considered so that performance, comfort, and aesthetics worked together.

Over an eighteen month build programme, our in-house design team worked closely with the homeowners, interior designers, and specialist partners to create a fully connected home that feels effortless to use in every room.

Designing a Bespoke M&K Home Cinema Room

The Cinema room became the centrepiece of the project.

Following an early design consultation and product demonstration experience, the clients were able to see first-hand what a professionally designed cinema room could achieve, helping shape both the specification and final layout of the room.

The finished cinema includes:

  • M&K IW500 LCR speaker system hidden behind an acoustically transparent screen
  • 2 x M&K X15 subwoofers to the front with additional rear low-frequency reinforcement
  • Side and rear surround speaker placement for full immersive performance
  • IC95 Inceiling Speakers
  • Fusion Storm amplification
  • JVC projection
  • Complete Control4 cinema control
  • Lutron Curtains

A key visual feature of the room is the Starscape ceiling, which allowed the original timber beams to remain while turning the ceiling into a subtle design statement.

The result is a room that delivers genuine cinema-scale sound and picture quality while still

Whole-Home Smart Technology Beyond the Cinema

While the cinema was the most technically demanding room, this project extended far beyond a single entertainment space.

The goal was simple: make every room feel considered, comfortable, and easy to live in.

Across four installation phases, we integrated:

  • distributed audio throughout key living spaces and bedrooms
  • intelligent lighting scenes
  • automated Lutron shading
  • Control4 whole-home control
  • dedicated audio and mood lighting within the gym
discreet networking and AV infrastructure throughout the property

This means the homeowners can control lighting, music, shading, entertainment and selected home systems from one intuitive platform, rather than managing multiple disconnected controls.

Working Around Interior Design Without Compromising Performance

One of the biggest challenges on this project was ensuring the technology remained visually discreet.

The interior designer wanted clean sightlines and minimal visible equipment, while the clients still expected exceptional audio-visual performance.

That required extensive behind-the-scenes planning:

  • hidden speaker positioning
  • acoustically appropriate soft furnishings
  • recessed curtain pocket integration
  • concealed control hardware
  • carefully coordinated lighting layouts

This is where integrated system design becomes critical. Good smart home technology should not feel bolted on after the build; it should feel as though it was always part of the home.

A four-phase installation delivered as one cohesive home

Many large residential projects are completed in stages, but the challenge is ensuring those stages never feel fragmented. At Cambridge Coach House, each new phase — from kitchen and living spaces to bedrooms, gym, and cinema — was designed as part of one joined-up user experience.

The homeowners now have:

  • Consistent control across the property
  • Reliable distributed audio
  • Automated comfort and shading
  • Immersive entertainment
  • Technology that supports the home rather than complicates it
  • Most importantly, every room works together.

Why projects like this matter

This project demonstrates what is possible when smart home technology is designed around the property and the people living in it. Rather than filling a house with gadgets, the aim was to create a home that is simpler to use, more enjoyable to live in, and built for long-term reliability.

From the bespoke cinema room to whole-home automation, Cambridge Coach House is a clear example of how considered planning and professional integration can transform a character property into a modern connected home.
